Modernization of secondary schools

As part of an EU blending project planned and co-financed jointly with the European Investment Bank (EIB), the Tunisian government's strategy for modernizing infrastructure in the education sector (2014-2016) is to be supported. The aim of the project is to improve access to secondary education as well as school quality and the learning environment through the construction and rehabilitation of a total of 369 secondary schools. The total cost of the project is estimated at EUR 213 million. The EIB, which is leading the project, plans to finance a third of the costs with a loan of EUR 70 million. The FC development loan of EUR 45 million covers around a fifth of the costs. In addition, grant funds from the EU's Neighbourhood Investment Facility (NIF) of EUR 12.5 million (6% of the costs) have been applied for, which are to be mixed into the loans as an investment grant. The remaining 40% of the project costs will be covered by the Tunisian side. A further EUR 7.5 million from the NIF will be used for technical assistance to the project sponsor in planning and implementing the project, as well as for a pilot measure to improve the learning climate and discipline at selected schools.
