Modular Data Centers Using Gas Pipeline Pressure for Power and Cooling

Power technology firms Sapphire Technologies and Anax Power are collaborating to deploy a system that converts excess pressure from gas pipelines into power and cooling for modular data centers. The system uses Sapphire's FreeSpin In-line Turboexpander to capture waste energy from pressure reduction in pipelines, integrated by Anax into colocated data center facilities. The data centers will be located adjacent to pressure regulating stations in the natural gas transmission network across the US, providing up to 3MW of electricity and 35 million BTU of cooling capacity, suitable for Edge AI inference, modular HPC deployments, distributed cloud infrastructure, and cryptocurrency mining.
