Moin Container Terminal - 1st Phase

In September 2011, APM Terminals signed a 33-year concession contract with the Costa Rican government to design, finance, construct, operate and maintain the new Moin Container Terminal on the Caribbean coast. The project was awarded to APM on the grounds of its technical and economical proposal, which included the lease fee and the investment amount. The port authority conducted a bidding process, but no additional information on the other bidders was available. In October 2013, the sponsors contracted Van Oord-BAM consortium for the construction of the first phase (Phase 2A) of the new Moin Container Terminal. APM agreed to pay US$ 460 million for the EPC works in this first phase. There were delays in the starting of the construction works due to judicial hurdles that were overthrown by October 2014. Construction works finally commenced in February 2015 financed by APM Terminals' own resources. The first phase of the project envisaged an investment of US$ 663 million (the total project costs was estimated at US$ 992 million), which would increase the port's capacity to 2.5 million TEU by 2030.
