Molson Brewery Expansion

Molson needed to expand their ageing cellar in order to increase the production at their Edmonton facility. To meet their future demand, Molson installed 9 new ageing tanks. Each tank has a capacity of 1,400 hectolitres (30,800 imperial gallons) and when full, each tank weighed 162,900 kg. This project included the construction of an additional 6,000 square feet onto the existing facility. The project included a concrete basement which is refrigerated for the ageing process. A new underground tunnel was installed which connects the new building to the existing building. The main floor has a concrete suspended slab with ring beam penetrations to support the 9 new tanks. These tanks were installed in a vertical direction and due to their size, the tanks had to be installed prior to completion of the building structure. With the tanks installed, a pre-engineered building was installed around these tanks. All of the finishing work including mechanical and electrical had to be completed around the new tanks. This project had a very tight and critical schedule, as work on this facility had to be coordinated with other Molson facilities across the country.
