Description
Description | Mersey Docks & Harbour (MDK) (UK), port operator, invested US$ 2 million in Grain Bulk Handlers (Kenya), which invested US$ 32 million in the development of a grain and fertiliser terminal at the port of Mombasa, Kenya. The terminal was expected to be operational in August 1999 with the capacity to handle 10.000 tons per day. An IFC loan financed the building of the first modern bulk handling and storage facility for unloading grain and fertilizer at the port of Mombasa. MIGA, in turn, granted a guarantee to the project sponsor for the construction and operation of the facility. The new US$ 32 million terminal was to be complete in early 1999, unloading capacity would amount to 10,000 tons per day. Upon construction completion, the UK firm Portia Management Services Ltd. (PMSL) would handle day-to-day operations under an 8-year management contract. PMSL was a subsidiary of Mersey Docks & Harbour Company. CDC (Commonwealth Development Corporation), signed a loan agreement to provide US$ 10 million to Grain Bulk Handlers Ltd (GBHL) in 12th March 1998. In 2005, PROPARCO (AFD Group) granted a loan of US$5.54 million to GBHL for the construction of new storage silos. In 2007, Actis invested a further US$15 million in GBHL. March 2009: Corrected BOT (ending 2008) for BOO, and remove ending date. |
