Description
Description | This project involves the installation of a dedicated storm sewer relief system to provide sewer separation on three streets in the City’s downtown core. There are several privately funded projects proposed in this area, but a study done by the City of Moncton’s engineering department has shown that the existing sewer system does not have enough capacity for the additional flows these developments would generate. The scope of the project includes new storm sewer extensions that would connect to an existing storm sewer system (built in 2007), as well as replacing an existing combined sewer with a dedicated sanitary sewer. In addition, the existing water distribution system which is made of cast iron pipe will be replaced. The streets will be fully reconstructed following the renewal of the underground infrastructure, and the existing aerial lines (communication and electricity) will be relocated underground, which will improve reliability during ice storm events. Additionally, Westmorland Street will be surcharged and raised to offset the rising sea levels, along with upgrading the surface treatment. The project aims to increase the City’s capacity to manage wastewater and stormwater, increase access to potable water, improve capacity and quality of pathways and active transportation infrastructure, and increase structural capacity to adapt to climate change and extreme weather events. |
