Description

Description

Opportunity Moncton's courthouse was no longer large enough to meet demands of the judicial system and its layout was not optimal for ensuring safety and security. Results The 133,000 square foot justice centre includes 15 courtrooms, two hearing rooms, a new secure detention centre as well as chambers for the judiciary. Construction of the facility took less than two years. The courthouse also has office space for sheriff services, victim services, probation services, family support services and Crown prosecutors as well as a law library. The building has three separate entrances for judges, defendants and the public and has metal detectors at the entrance, more than 140 security cameras and 170 individual panic alarms, significantly improving safety over the previous courthouse. More courtrooms helped the province address a backlog of cases and will ensure the judicial system has the capacity to meet future demand. "This project meets a critical need identified by the judicial community for improved and expanded court facilities for the greater Moncton region. It will also allow all court activities in the community to take place in a more secure, state-of-the-art, accessible facility." - Ed Doherty, former Minister of Supply and Services
