Description
Description | The country’s single largest circulating fluidized bed combustion power plantMong Duong Ward in Cam Pha City, Quang Ninh Province, is located one hour away from Ha Long Bay, one of seven wonders of nature, and about five hours away from and northeast of Hanoi, the national capital of Vietnam. Here is the construction site of the Mong Duong 1 Thermal Power Plant project which is the country’s single biggest circulating fluidized bed combustion(CFBC) thermal power plant. After neck-to-neck competition with Chinese competitors, Hyundai E&C signed a 1.47-billion-dollar EPC contract with Vietnam Electricity (EVN) in September 2011 and started construction in December the same year. As part of the national project fully supported by the Vietnamese government to resolve the country’s chronic problem with lack of supply of electricity, the Mong Duong project is funded by Korea Eximbank (40 percent) and the Asian Development Bank (60 percent).Hyundai E&C has been working on building a coal-fired power plant with a total capacity of 1,080 MW including four units of 270 MW boilers and two units of 540 MW STG. Currently, 99.7 percent of the construction was completed. Hyundai E&C already finished the construction of Mong Duong Power Plant Unit 1 on September 21 this year and will be devoted to building Unit 2 by the end of this year. The completion of the project would ensure the production of 6.5 billion kWh of electricity that about 5.1 million residents living in the northern part of Vietnam can use for a year.In Vietnam, the heating value of anthracite coal is too low to be utilized in pulverized coal (PC) boilers mainly used for coalfired power plants. Against this backdrop, Hyundai E&C introduced circulating fluidized bed combustion boilers to the Mong Doung Power Plant project by using anthracite coal with a lower heating value and increasing energy efficiency at the same time. Circulating fluidized bed combustion boilers are considered eco-friendly facilities that can significantly cut back on emissions of pollutants such as nitrogen oxides and sulfur oxides by injecting air and limestone into furnaces simultaneously and combusting the fuel in a circular manner. As interest in environmental issues is growing fast in Vietnam, our construction site is attracting more attention and expectations.Toward successful completion A series of failures in the static pile load test in the early stage of construction work led to two months of delay. However, the around-the-clock acceleration work successfully caught up with the delay. Weather was another obstacle to the implementation of the project. During June to September, Vietnam usually faces a high humidity, frequent typhoons and heavy rains, which makes it difficult to carry out construction works for a considerable period of time.Although we had an unusually high number of rainy days at the peak of the construction in 2013 and 2014, all staff members and project manager worked day and night, ending up with meeting a deadline.Hyundai E&C is the only one Korean engineering company which conducts a large-scale project to build a circulating fluidized bed combustion power plant in Vietnam on an EPC turnkey basis. Based on the successful completion of the project, we will forge a closer relationship with Hyundai E&C’s clients. Further, we are expecting to win more deals to construct circulating fluidized bed combustion power plants in Vietnam and other Southeast Asian countries rich in coal with a lower heating value.Currently, a 220-meter flue gas stack and coal sheds which can store anthracite coal used for up to 12 days stand high in the construction site. Proud of brining the Korean Wave in Vietnamese construction sector, our all staff members will strive to complete the project in a successful way. |
