Mongolian Telecom Company (MTC) was the state-owned national operator and monopoly provider of most of the telecommunications services in the country, except for a GSM network owned and operated by Mobicom Corp by 1996. In 1995 the government issued the decision to divest a part of its share in MTC and divided it into 2 companies: “Mongolian Communications Asset Company” – the government owned company and Mongolian Telecommunications Company - the shareholding company, with majority of shares owned by the Mongolian Government and 40% owned by Korea Telecom company of the Republic of Korea. The government sold the 40% stake for US$4.5 million. At that time, assets for local services were transferred to the now patially private MTC, while the ownership of backbone transmission and international gateway remained with the government. MTC also acquired the rights to operate the domestic and international long distance services. Later the government sold 5.33% to a Mongolian financial institution, leaving the government with 54.67%. The government had planned to divest its shares in the backbone transmission and international gateway assets but had not done so as of December 2005. In 2005, ZTE of China agreed to provide Mongolia Telecom with a range of telecommunications solutions, including NGN (next generation network), DWDM (dense wavelength division multiplexing), ADSL (asymmetric digital subscriber line) and CDMA WLL (code-division multiple access wireless local loop) equipment. Also in 2005, Huawei Technologies, the largest domestic telecom equipment vendor in China, signed an agreement to supply Mongolia Telecom with NGN (next generation network) solutions. Seems similar to project 1772. Especially regarding subscriber numbers ("capacity size").
