Description
Description | The MPM2026 proposes a new and fine-tuned implementation of the Media Pluralism Monitor (MPM). The MPM has assessed and mapped risks to media freedom and pluralism in the EU and beyond since its first EU-wide implementation in 2016. For its new implementation, the MPM2026 will be implemented in all EU member states and four candidate countries (Albania, Montenegro, Serbia, and the Republic of North Macedonia) and cover the year 2025. In light of the increasing challenges and risks to media freedom and pluralism across Europe, the project aims to provide a comprehensive and objective analysis of the state of media pluralism in the countries studied. More specifically, with the entry into force of the European Media Freedom Act (EMFA) in 2025, the MPM aims to assess the current state of EMFA implementation, and the changes EMFA brings in EU member states legislation. The MPM2026 will also incorporate a specific analysis of the indicators mentioned in art 26 EMFA (the monitoring exercise), building on the data collected through its questionnaire and extracting relevant information. To achieve such a result, the MPM adopts a multi-disciplinary approach drawing on a large network of experts from various fields including media law, economics, journalism, and political science. The results of the MPM - publicly available on the CMPF website - will provide valuable insights for policymakers, media professionals, and civil society organisations. The research and implementation of the MPM will also keep informing the annual Rule of Law Report of the EU, as it has done since 2020. It will also focus on potential policy responses to specific risks assessed in the MPM at national and European level and on the implementation of the EMFA. Besides, the MPM project will also include dissemination and training activities, in particular the organisation of a Summer School for Journalists and Media Practitioners, that will further contribute to spreading the results of the MPM. |
