Montana Data Center Energy Supply and Cost Allocation

NorthWestern Energy has issued letters of intent to provide up to 1,400 megawatts of electricity to three data center developers in Montana, potentially more than doubling the current electrical demand of 760 megawatts. The project involves upgrading transmission systems and possibly adding new electricity sources to meet this demand. Montana organizations have filed a complaint with the Montana Public Service Commission to create a separate customer class for data centers to pay for their energy costs, rather than spreading costs to residential customers.
