Sector: Aerospace & Defense • Location: Montauk, New York, United States
Source: Social Life Magazine
The Montauk Air Force Station was reactivated in the early 1950s for Cold War radar surveillance. The AN/FPS-35 radar tower, approximately 90 feet tall with a 40-foot steel dish, was constructed to scan the Atlantic for Soviet aircraft and incoming threats. It was part of a radar network along the East Coast and is the only one of 12 such towers still standing, now a National Historic Landmark.
