Monterey Park Data Center Project

HMC StratCap, an Australian company, planned to build a sprawling new data center in Monterey Park, California, which would be the size of four football fields and close to homes. The project faced intense public opposition due to concerns about pollution, increased electricity bills, noise, and air pollution. The company invested $40 million to acquire a 200,000-square-foot property for the data center and a larger adjacent parcel for development. Despite initial support from city officials, a grassroots activist group led a campaign resulting in a city council decision to allow a June ballot measure for residents to vote on a ban. HMC StratCap withdrew its application to build the data center citing new restrictions and the upcoming vote.
