Description | The Moonie Oil Fields were discovered in 1961 by US company Union Oil, marking Australia's first commercial oil field. A pipeline was constructed by 1964 to transport oil to the Brisbane refinery. The oil field operated with multiple wells and changed ownership several times, with Santos acquiring full interest in 1993 and later selling to Bridgeport Energy in 2016. The pipeline experienced leaks in the early 2000s and was permanently closed in 2008. Bridgeport Energy continues to operate the field with potential production until around 2050. |
