Morocco - Electricity Power Grid Interconnection Strengthening Project

The present intervention focuses on the project to reinforce electricity interconnections. More specifically, it aims to strengthen electricity interconnections with Algeria and Spain in order to diversify energy sources and meet a constant and sustained demand at affordable prices for economic development. The project thus responds to Morocco's strategy of diversifying its sources of electricity supply, by using the natural gas transiting from Algeria to Spain, gradually developing its renewable energy potential, and increase the exchange of electrical energy. The main components of the project are: 1) the construction of 670 km of 400 kV THT and 60 km of 225 kV lines; 2) the installation of a second Morocco-Spain 400 kV submarine link; 3) the construction of 3 substations 400/225 kV and extension of a substation; 4) the strengthening and extension of the 225 kV and 60 kV network by the construction of 4 225/60 kV substations and 175 km of 220 kV lines; 5) the supply and installation of an optical fiber network on the existing THT and HT lines; 6) the implementation of mitigation measures for environmental impacts; and 7) the services of studies, supervision and control of works.
