Description
Description | Motovun Film Festival is a Croatian international film festival that takes place annually in July, created and launched in 1999 by a group of film professionals as an answer to the absolute domination of Hollywood films in Croatian theatres. In terms of programming, festival tries to reflect diversity: esthetical, thematic, gender and geographical. Thus, the choice of 106 feature and short films is a combination of the European and the world independent film landscape. Motovun is an EFA partner festival, in other words, the winner of the festival short film program becomes a candidate for the European Film Awards short film category. MFF lasts for nine days - first 4 dedicated to European children’s film – Buzz@teen and takes place in a small medieval walled city that becomes home of most prominent film titles and film directors. MFF holds more than 40 open air screenings during the festival in Motovun, Buzet, Zagreb, Dubrovnik, Split and Zagreb and 30 more as satellite events. Various side events like q&a sessiones, art presentationsand round tables, breakfast masterclass sessions, debate clubs, live cinema acts and a 5 day Campus/industry program for students take place as a part of the festival. Maverick award is given to prominent filmmakers for their unconventional approach, courage and openmindedness, past winners who visited Motovun include Pawel Pawlikowski, Terry Jones, Ulrich Seidl,Terence Davies, Jerzy Skolimowski, Agnieszka Holland, Ruben Ostlund, etc. And after the festival dates are finished, MFF is organising satellite event screenings, mostly open air screenings in the cities with no cinema, but also an all year long project Kino istra supported by EC aiming on cinema revitalisation in Istrian cities without cinema. Despite being located away from the capital, and with only 1000 inhabitants, the town of Motovun attracts around 20 000 visitors during festival and the festival attracts additional 7000 visitors at simultaneous and satellite events. |
