Description

Mount Rushmore is a monumental sculpture project originally conceived in the early 1920s to depict America's wild-west heroes, later changed to feature four U.S. presidents. Sculptor Gutzon Borglum used an ancient Greek mechanical technique called a "pointing machine" to replicate a small-scale model onto the 500-foot-tall mountain, guiding workers on where to drill. The project involved building necessary infrastructure on and around the mountain and took fourteen years before being halted due to Borglum's death and World War II, leaving the monument incomplete but iconic.
