Description
Description | "Movies that Matter Festival 2026–2027 is an Oscar-qualifying international film festival dedicated to human rights cinema, held annually in March in The Hague. As the world's third-largest human rights film festival and the only one in the Netherlands, it leverages film as a catalyst for dialogue, public awareness, and civic engagement on pressing global issues. The festival aims to bridge societal divides and foster inclusivity by promoting impactful films and media, engaging diverse audiences, and strengthening the European audiovisual sector. For 2026 and 2027, the festival sets three primary objectives aligning with Creative Europe’s priorities, promoting European cultural diversity, accessibility, and sustainability in film. 1. Expanding European film circulation and access: By curating a diverse programme featuring at least 65% non-national European films, supporting partner festivals, and increasing year-round screenings. 2. Audience development and youth engagement: Enhancing digital tools, collaborating with youth influencers and introducing ""Xtending Realities,"" a hybrid arts and film programme using immersive media. 3. Strengthening the European audiovisual industry: Supporting filmmakers through industry programmes, impact strategy mentoring, and cross-sector collaboration with NGOs and human rights activists. Our 2 festival editions will feature 8 competitions in 2026 and 9 in 2027, along with special themes, industry activities, and international support. The programme also encompasses extensive educational and satellite initiatives, with year-round screenings worldwide. The festival expects 26,500 attendees in 2026 and 28,000 in 2027. By 2027, Movies that Matter aims to engage approximately 1.37 million people across its multi-faceted communication strategy, ensuring human rights films reach wider audiences through innovative hybrid models blending physical and digital experiences." |
