Description

Description

The Movies that Matter film festival is an annual event in The Hague with the main goal to open the world's eyes to human rights through the power of film. The Movies that Matter Festival editions 2022 and 2023 focus on screening and promoting films about human rights and justice in The Hague, the International City of Peace and Justice. Due to COVID-19, we prepare a hybrid format, combining an online platform and live activities. Both editions will present 80 documentaries and fiction films and 20 shorts in more than 300 screenings, various side-programs, talkshows, debates and exhibitions. To maximise impact, international filmmakers, producers and activists share experiences with the audience, attend masterclasses, debates and industry events. The exchanges between the film industry, NGOs, media, the audience and human rights activists makes the festival unique. During the 10-day festival international juries hand out 8 awards: the Grand Jury Fiction Award and Grand Jury Documentary Award (both 5.000,-), awards within the Activist, Camera Justitia, Dutch Movies Matter programmes, in the Shorts competition and Student’s Choice competition, and finally the BNNVARA Audience Award (5.000,-). The team actively manifests itself year-round at European film festivals and in the AV industry by moderating and participating in panels and pitching sessions. During the festival we organise the Film & Impact Market for professionals, a workshop program for festival organisers, and the Human Rights Film Network Annual Meeting. For the audience we organise screenings in 8 satellite cities in the NL during the festival. Our year-round educational programme is visited by over 9,000 pupils during the festival and reaches over 160,000 young people. Finally, we bring films and Q&As to the Dutch cinemas and organise tailor-made film screenings with Q&As throughout the Netherlands in our On Tour programme.
