Industrial transformation is a current day reality, which can bring growth and competitiveness. Yet, is can also leave producers and workers behind, causing economic and social losses. MAE addresses the need for sustainable and innovative transformation of industrial value chains, linked to future-oriented manufacturing potential. We consider how SMEs from industrial sector segments facing possible obsolescence can achieve a new role in the expanding aerospace sector. The challenge for public actors is to create an ecosystem to supports this, ensuring stakeholder involvement, a responsible approach and supporting structures and skills needed by SMEs. MAE groups partners from 7 regions, who want to face this challenge together. Their overall objective is to develop public policies that support a responsible transformation of relevant industrial sectors towards the future orientated, aerospace sector. Their starting point changes (some already well advanced in aerospace, other catching up). Changes are expected to policy instruments (ERDF ROPs, Local strategies, S3 strategies), notably in ecosystem support, financing for SMEs innovation and Public Authority capacity building. MAE achieves this through exchanging experiences in a context of interregional activities, communication and stakeholder engagement, all connected by a Responsible Innovation approach. With Master Classes, workshops, surveys, visits and communication, partners road map desired transformation and implement it, resulting in improved policy instruments, more and better targeted funding, increased capacity among staff and political/technical stakeholders, new or improved models for responsible industrial value-chains transition towards aerospace. MAE paves the way for a system to support industrial sector segments to take advantage of future-oriented manufacturing potential. A new generation of highly trained public actors support a new generation of responsible, innovative SMEs in aerospace.
