Description | The Mozal aluminium smelter in Mozambique, majority owned by South32, is facing uncertainty over its future electricity supply contract which expires in March 2026. The project has been unable to secure an affordable electricity tariff despite years of negotiations with the Mozambique government, Hidroeléctrica de Cahora Bassa (HCB), and Eskom. Drought conditions have also impacted HCB's hydro-electric power generation capacity, increasing the risk to the smelter's operations. South32 is continuing to engage with stakeholders to secure affordable electricity supply to enable the smelter to operate beyond March 2026. |
