Mozambique - Education II Project

The Education II Project is consistent with the government of Mozambique’s plans to accelerate access to education and improve the quality of teachers. The project addresses three fundamental problems which the government had identified as having a negative impact on all levels of the education system; limited access to educational opportunities, poor quality, and the cost of expanding access and improving quality. Its implementation will help improve Mozambique's literacy level, which is currently among the lowest in Africa. The Project, which will be implemented over a period of four years, is articulated around the following components: (i) Primary Teacher Training Centres (PTTCs); (ii) Primary Schools in Resettlement Areas; (iii) Secondary School Study; (iv) Strengthening of the project implementation unit (GEPE). The project will sharply raise the output of primary school teachers and thus significantly improve the quality of primary school education. Furthermore, the components in the priority districts will help to ease the resettlement problems. Both aspects will facilitate Mozambique's economic and social development process through improved literacy and better understanding of modern agricultural methods and health practices.
