Description

Description

The Water Supply Rehabilitation project complements the Government’s efforts, in partnership with the World Bank and Caisse Française de Developpement, to develop the water supply and sanitation sector in Maputo. The rehabilitated and extended Maputo Water Supply will be able to supply Hulene, Laulane, and Mahotas peri urban areas of Maputo, which were not supplied before. The project will strengthen the Government efforts in reforming the sector. It will also improve the living conditions of the lower income groups by making available less expensive water supply, nearer to their residences, which would result in savings of financial resources and of time. The project therefore contributes to poverty reduction in the country that is a priority of the Government as highlighted in the Country Strategy paper for Mozambique. The project comprises the urgent and essential rehabilitation and extension works of the existing water supply system of Maputo. These will include: (i) Increase filter capacity at the water treatment works; (ii) Matola-Chamanculo trunk main; (iii) Chamanculo-Laulane trunk main; (iv) Distribution centre at Laulane; (v) Distribution network Hulene/Laulane/Mahotas; (vi) Upgrading Chamanculo pumping Station; (vii) Rehabilitation Chamanculo-Maxaquene pipeline; (viii) Additional water storage at Maxaquene. The other components of the project are health education, sanitation/solid waste component, engineering services, and technical assistance for the EA. The total cost of the project is estimated at UA 23.72 million and will be implemented over a period of 3.5 years.
