Description

Description

The construction of the cross-border power transmission line between Mozambique and Malawi will physically connect Malawi to the interconnected network of the regional power network in southern Africa, the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP), for the first time, thereby enabling regional electricity trading between these two countries and, in the long term, with other SAPP member states. The project involves the construction of an approximately 218 km long high-voltage transmission line (400 kV) between Matambo (Tete Province, Mozambique) and Phombeya (Balaka District, Malawi). In addition to power transmission, the regional high-voltage transmission line will also be used to expand telecommunications services and will be equipped with additional fiber optic cables (ICT component). The total cost of the transmission line is currently estimated at USD 107 million. The FC grant totaling EUR 30 million will be used, together with the World Bank, to finance the investment costs incurred on the Mozambican side. The recipient of the grant is the state of Mozambique. The project sponsor is the state-owned energy company Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM).
