The early extension of the MRS Logística S.A. concession contract was qualified in the Investment Partnership Program (PPI) at the 2nd Meeting of the PPI Council, through Resolution No. 10, of 03/07/2017, converted into Decree No. 9,059, of 05/25/2017. The benefits expected from the extension of the current contract, for another 30 years, will be the mandatory investments in security and the increase in capacity, which will be agreed by the National Land Transport Agency (ANTT). The extension, which will end on November 30, 2026, will also bring forward investments, which would only be made from 2027 onwards. MRS Logística operates in the States of Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, hence its acronym. It has a network 1,686 km long, in broad gauge (1.60 m) or mixed. The main merchandise transported is iron ore, originating in the mines around Belo Horizonte and destined for several exporting ports in Rio de Janeiro, traveling along the Steel Railway (Jeceaba-Saudade section). The empty cars return via the Centro Line, which connects Rio de Janeiro to Belo Horizonte, in a carousel system. It also operates the line from Rio de Janeiro to São Paulo and the line from Santos to Jundiaí, where it connects with Rumo Malha Paulista. MRS has access to the Port of Santos on the right and left banks. Its main feature is rack-and-pinion operation on the descent of Serra do Mar, with 800m of elevation difference and ramps of 8 to 10%. The main goods moved in 2018, in thousands of useful tons, were: Sugar, 2,421 Bauxite, 783 Mineral Coal, 2,276 Cellulose, 806 Cement, 1,427 Containers, 1,131 Coke, 1,262 Pig Iron, 1,019 Iron Ore, 115,962 Steel Products, 6,675 Soy, 1,072 A large part of the grant from this project may be directed to investments in the public interest, such as new investments in the network itself or in other interventions on the national railway network (cross-investments). These improvements will be an obligation of the dealership. History – MRS Logística S.A. obtained the concession for Malha Sudeste, belonging to Rede Ferroviária Federal S.A., in the auction held on 20/09/1996. The granting of this concession was effected by the Presidential Decree of 11/26/1996, published in the Official Gazette of the Union of 11/27/1996. The company began operating public rail freight transport services on 12/01/1996.
