Description
Description | The project will make upgrades and retrofits to build a culturally appropriate office and gathering place in Surrey where Metis people from across the province are able to access various resources, programs and services, host gatherings and meetings. The "Mamawii" (which means "all together") project would allow the Metis Provincial Council of BC to create a culturally appropriate front line public service centre and gathering place where Metis individuals come to access community and cultural programs, employment and training initiatives and where Metis individuals can register for citizenship. Metis Nation British Columbia (MNBC) represents nearly 90,000 self-identified Metis people in BC and more than 20,000 are registered MNBC Citizens. However, MNBC does not have any Metis-specific cultural or community gathering place within the Province to meet the needs of the Nation. This project also advances the Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action and the B.C. Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act by assisting with a culturally appropriate gathering place and front line public service centre for MNBC. The project works include: - Renovation of 8000sqft. of existing office/programming space including kitchen, meeting and library space; - electrical, plumbing and mechanical; - millwork; - painting and flooring; - signage; and, - all related works. |
