Description | MTN Nigeria was one of three new entrants recently awarded licenses to provide GSM telephony service in Nigeria. Licenses were won through an open competitive process that is widely viewed as one of the principal successes of Nigeria''s ongoing liberalization and privatization process. The 15 year license, with an optional renewal period, covers 900 and 1800 MHz spectrum. MTN Nigeria has two GSM competitors, Econet, the other successful bidder, and the government owned incumbent, Nitel. MTN Nigeria is 80% owned by Mobile Telephone Networks Holdings (Proprietary) Limited (MTN), a South African wireless operator with mobile networks in South Africa, Uganda, Rwanda, Cameroon, and Swaziland. The other 20% is owned by local Nigerian shareholders, who have options to increase their share holdings to approximately 37%. |
