Multinational - Central Africa Biodiversity Conservation Programme – Protecting Central Africa’s Elephants

The Biodiversity Conservation Programme in Central Africa (PCBAC) is an investment operation for biodiversity conservation through savannah elephants (Loxodonta Africana) protection in the Northern part of Central Africa. In recent years, there has been intense elephant poaching activity in Central Africa. The programme should help to confront this severe threat to the survival of savannah elephants, which could ultimately lead to their disappearance from the Central Africa region as was the case earlier with two of the subregion’s rhino species (Ceratotherium simum cottoni & Diceros bicornis). To achieve its objective, the programme comprises two components: (i) improved border management, which has anti-poaching and sensitization aspects; and (ii) programme management. The programme period is 3 years. Its total cost estimate is UA 3.98 million, of which an ADF grant/loan of UA 3.00 million, an Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS) contribution of UA 0.78 million and UA 0.2 million from beneficiary States.
