Description

Description

The proposed project, which is part of the West Africa Power Pooling Programme, involves the construction of a 338 kV transmission line between Sakete in Benin and the Volta substation near Tema in Ghana, via Togo. It also includes the extension of the Sakete and Volta-Tema substations as well as the construction of a new substation in Mome Hagou, Togo. The West Africa Power Pooling Programme will enable the emergence of a unified electricity market in ECOWAS through the establishment of interconnections between the electricity grids of its member countries. Interconnections such as the Ghana-Togo-Benin transmission line will enable the flow of energy between countries capable of producing hydropower at lower cost and countries where electricity supply currently depends on thermal power stations powered by expensive imported oil. The project will increase transmission capacity between Nigeria, Benin, Togo and Ghana, thus facilitating the exchange of electricity, which is expected to increase the reliability of electricity supply and reduce transaction costs. By enabling power exchange, the interconnections will also enable utilities in the region to optimally manage the use of scarce water resources during drought periods. The total cost of the power line connection project is estimated at UA 71.34 million, equivalent to US$ 115.6 million.
