Multinational - Kankan-Kouremale-Bamako Road Development Project

The Kankan-Kouremale-Bamako Road falls within the framework of both Guinea and Mali sectoral policies aimed at improving the competitiveness of their transport systems through infrastructure modernization, trade and private sector promotion. Project The Kankan-Kouremale-Bamako road is very important to the economic and social development of Guinea’s North-West and Mali’s South-East regions, and in that capacity is a tool for sub-regional integration. As designed, the project aims at reducing constraints in the sub-sector in order to: (i) improve trade-enhancing conditions between the two countries; (ii) strengthen the capacity of road directorates; and (iii) improve conditions to promote SMEs through the road fund. Moreover, the road will provide Mali with an alternative link with the outside world at more economical conditions than existing ones, as well as strengthen economic relations between the two countries. The main components of the project are: 1) construction of two prestressed concrete bridges on the Niger River (490 m long) and on Tinkisso (245 m); 2) construction of an 82 km road 7 m wide and two shoulders of 1.5 each; 3) mitigation measures for environmental impacts by tree planting along the road; and 4) capacity building of the National Directorate of Public Works (DNTP).
