Description

Description

The NEPA – CEB Multinational Power Interconnection Project is part of a much wider project, which will allow greater power exchange between countries of the West African sub-region. The project will supply electricity from Nigeria to Togo and Benin through a 330 kV transmission line. On the Nigerian side, the line will be connected to the existing Ikeja West 330 kV substation, where electricity is directly supplied from NEPA and privately owned power stations. On the Togo/Benin side, the line will end at the newly erected Sakete substation in Benin where it will feed a transformer, which will step down the voltage from 330 kV to 161 kV for connection to the existing CEB 161 kV transmission lines. The electricity will then be transported, by the CEB transmission grid, to various parts of Togo and Benin and, in limited quantities, to Ghana through the lines presently used for import by the CEB. The project consists of the following components: (i) construction of a 330 kV transmission line with a length of 70 km from Ikeja in Nigeria to Sakete in Benin, (ii) extension of an existing 330 kV substation at Ikeja and construction of a new 330/161 kV substation in Sakete, (iii) mitigation of environmental and social impacts, (iv) provision of consultancy services and (v) project management. Its implementation will create a big electricity market across national boundaries, thereby encouraging private investors to build gas-fired power stations in Nigeria for electricity generation and export. The 330 kV line will later be extended to Togo, Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire, where it will be connected to the existing transmission grids in those countries. The total cost, net of taxes, is estimated at US$ 46.59 million (UA 35.02 million).
