Description

Description

The present project falls within the strategic context of HIV/AIDS control as adopted by the Heads of State in their statement of undertaking on HIV/AIDS during the extraordinary session of the United Nations General Assembly in June 2001. It addresses the concerns of the local populations (travellers, migrants, refugees and riverside populations) who find themselves in a situation of vulnerability and greater risk vis-à-vis the STI/HIV/AIDS, not only because they are in general far removed from the urban health care centres, but also and mainly because of their mobility. Furthermore, these populations have been adversely affected by the recurrent socio-political disturbances in the region. The project also meets the concerns of the governments of the member States of the Initiative about the reduction of the socio-economic impact of STI and HIV/AIDS on the development of their respective countries, more so as the authorities of the four countries expect a significant increase in the migration flows following the liberation of the occupied territories in DRC and the resumption of commercial activities on the rivers. It has three main components, namely: (i) strengthening of the preventive measures and treatment of, and assistance to infected and affected persons (ii) promotion of multi-sectoral and sub-regional co-ordination and (iii) project management.
