Description | The Afrobarometer is a survey research project that measures the social, economic, and political atmosphere in Africa. It asks African citizens about their opinions on a Wide range of subjects, including democracy, markets, and civil society. The same questions are asked across countries and over time, thus allowing broad comparisons and the tracking of trends. The Afrobarometer began in 1999, since which time two rounds of surveys have been conducted. Round 1 covered 12 countries between July 1999 and April 2001: namely Botswana, Ghana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mali, Namibia, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. The project is operated by an Afrobarometer Network based in Africa. Three core partners are responsible for project management: the Institute for Democracy in South Africa (IDASA), the Centre for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana) and Michigan State University. More than a dozen national partners — including African NGOs, university research centers, and market research firms — conduct survey fieldwork, enter data, and collaborate With the core partners in the production of research reports. |
