Description

The Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail project is India's first bullet train project, covering a 508 km route across Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Dadra & Nagar Haveli with 12 planned stations. The project is being executed with technical and financial assistance from the Government of Japan. The Vapi-Sabarmati section in Gujarat is expected to be ready by December 2027, and the entire corridor connecting Mumbai is expected to be operational by the end of 2029. The project involves complex and technology-intensive works including civil structures, track, electrical, signaling & telecommunication, and supply of trainsets. As of June 2025, Rs 78,839 crore has been spent on the project. Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) is funding 81% of the project cost, with the remaining funded by the Ministry of Railways and the Maharashtra and Gujarat state governments. Most civil contracts have been awarded, with 24 out of 28 tender packages awarded. Significant construction progress includes pier construction, girder casting and launching, and the start of under-sea tunnel work. Land acquisition and statutory clearances have been completed. Detailed Project Reports are being prepared for expanding the bullet train network beyond this corridor.
