Mumbai Water Metro Project

planned

Mumbai Water Metro project involves the introduction of modern, sustainable water transport in Mumbai through a partnership between Maharashtra Maritime Board and Norway's Hyke AS. The project aims to supply eco-friendly ferries and develop local shipbuilding facilities in Maharashtra to update Mumbai's fleet, reduce traffic congestion, and boost the maritime industry and employment. The project includes upgrading 24 existing terminals and constructing 21 new terminals in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, with integration to bus and rail networks for seamless travel. The project faces operational and financial challenges, including risks of delays, cost overruns, land acquisition, environmental permits, and navigational safety. The project cost is expected to be in billions of dollars, requiring both government and private funding.
