Description

Description

The Mumbai–Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (HSR) project is a high-speed railway corridor sanctioned at Rs 98,000 crore, with 80% funding from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The project has faced delays, cost overruns, and indecision, with costs ballooning to nearly Rs 2 lakh crore. Civil works have picked up pace after government changes, with construction progressing faster than ever, including completion of about 325 km of viaducts and 400 km of piers. The project includes a 21-km underground stretch between Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) and Shilphata, where tunnel-boring machines were delayed due to supply-chain restrictions but have now reached India. Indian Railways is developing its own 280 kmph train and has awarded the signalling contract to a European consortium, aiming for operational speeds of 250 kmph by 2028 and 320 kmph by 2029. The project aims to commission a 50 km stretch in Gujarat by 2027 or 2028.
