Mumbra Bypass Project

In August 2000, the Public Works Department (PWD) of the State Government of Maharashtra entered into an agreement with Atlanta Limited (AL) for developing the Mumbra Bypass Project, a greenfield road project, on build-own-transfer (BOT) basis. Under the agreement, AL was expected to build the 5.41 km long bypass on National Highway – 4 between Mumbai and Pune, and operate it for 16 years (and 4 months), including the construction period of 57 months. The total capital cost of the project was estimated at US$ 29.6 million. AL was to be compensated for the capital and operating costs from the tolls collected during the commercial operation period. Construction works on the project began in 2000. The project experienced considerable delays during construction due to delays in obtaining approval from the Railway authorities. The project was scheduled to begin commercial operations in January 2007.
