Description

In July 2008, the 35MW Mumias BOO 30% captive power plant reached financial closure. The private sponsor was Mumias Sugar Company, Kenya’s largest sugar miller. The waste generated power plant was developed to produce heat for sugar's production and 12MW for the sponsor's industrial use. The remaining power, 23MW, was expected to be sold to the national utility company. In July 2008, Mumias Sugar Company entered into a power-purchase agreement with Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) to feed 23MW into the national grid for US$0.06/kWh. In February 2010, it was agreed that Mumias was to receive 26MW of power at a price of $0.08 per MW, under a deal approved by the Ministry of Energy and the Energy Regulatory Commission. The project was financed through a US$35 million loan from France’s Proparco. The power plant became operational in July 2009. 26/35MW sold to the public. 26% captive.
