Mundra-Mohindergarh Power Tranmission Line Project
Sector: Road • Location: India
Source: World Bank Group
The Mundra to Mohindergarh transmission in Haryana state consisted of bipolar 500-kilovolt (kV), 1,000 km high voltage direct-current (HVDC) double circuit line connecting Mundra power station to Northern India. The transmission line was for evacuating power from Adani’s Mundra power stations (4620MW Mundra Thermal Power Project ID 4833). The HVDC system was designed to provide low-loss transmissi

Description
Description | The Mundra to Mohindergarh transmission in Haryana state consisted of bipolar 500-kilovolt (kV), 1,000 km high voltage direct-current (HVDC) double circuit line connecting Mundra power station to Northern India. The transmission line was for evacuating power from Adani’s Mundra power stations (4620MW Mundra Thermal Power Project ID 4833). The HVDC system was designed to provide low-loss transmission of electrical energy over a distance of approximately 960 km from a coal-fired power plant near the port city of Mundra on India’s west coast to the industrial regions of the state of Haryana in the vicinity of New Delhi. Adani Power was the project sponsor. The project represented the country's first private sector-developed, high-voltage transmission line. Adani Power was to operate the HVDC system and was also owner of the coal-fired power plant near Mundra. In May 2009 Adani Power Ltd awarded a Rs1,500-crore order to Siemens AG and its Indian arm Siemens Ltd for constructing India's longest private high voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission line. The two companies agreed to build the HVDC terminal stations at the two extremities and the supporting infrastructure en route. Phase-I of the project was scheduled for commissioning by Feb 2011, but became operational in April 2011. Phase-II was scheduled for commissioning in Jul 2011. In 2008/09, Adani Power Ltd (APL) obtained permission from the Government of India to lay a 1,000-kilometre dedicated 2,500-megawatt (MW) high voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission line to Haryana. The scope of the project includes an HVDC bipole line from Mundra to Mohindergarh, terminal stations in these two towns and electrode stations and lines in between. The project cost was estimated to be Rs27.5 billion (US$601 million) at financial closure according to Projectware. When the project was announced in 2008 the cost was estimated to be Rs.20 billion (US$460 million). Financial close was on 22 Oct 2010. Financing comprised Rs22bn debt and Rs5.5bn equity. Debt comprised a Rs22bn 12-year 6-month term loan arranged by Axis Bank. |
