The infrastructure for water and wastewater supply in the Ukrainian city of Chernivtsi is very outdated, which leads to both high water loss rates and comparatively high operating costs. As part of the module, the drinking water supply and wastewater disposal system of the city of Chernivtsi in southwestern Ukraine will be rehabilitated and modernized in several phases. The target group is the entire population of the city of Chernivtsi (266,000 inhabitants). The aim of the module is to ensure a sustainable, continuous and consumption-oriented drinking water supply and to guarantee environmentally friendly, sustainable wastewater disposal and treatment. The project contributes to reducing negative impacts on the health situation (SDG 3) and to better living conditions for the urban population (SDG 11). In addition, a contribution is made to the sustainable and environmentally sound management of local water resources, to improving the local and regional environmental situation and to the provision of local sanitation for all (SDG 6). The borrower is the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine, represented by the Ministry of Finance. The project sponsor is Chernivtsi Vodokanal (CVK). The total cost of the program is estimated at around EUR 75 million. Of this, EUR 17 million was financed as FC loans in Phase I and EUR 21.55 million in Phase II. The Ukrainian contribution for Phase I is up to EUR 7. Grant funds of EUR 3.0 million from the EU's Neighborhood Investment Facility (NIF) are being used to finance the accompanying measure and implementation consultant for Phase I. EUR 2.0 million was financed as an accompanying measure for Phase II. In addition, EUR 16.4 million was provided in grants from the Strengthening Ukrainian Local Government module. A further EU NIF grant of EUR 15 million is also being prepared.
