Core problem Severe pollution of surface waters in urban areas by domestic and industrial wastewater; Inadequate wastewater collection in suburban and informal settlement areas as well as inadequate wastewater treatment in urban areas in Brazil; Energy-intensive water supply and wastewater disposal as well as the generation of greenhouse gases in sewage treatment plants. Module objective Ensuring hygienically and ecologically adequate wastewater disposal as well as increasing energy efficiency and reducing greenhouse gases. Contribution to the national implementation of Agenda 2030 Contribution to the achievement of SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), SDG 3 (Health and Well-Being), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) and SDG 13 (Climate Protection); Contribution to the achievement of the Brazilian Nationally Determined Contributions (reduction of CO2 emissions by 37% by 2025 compared to 2005 levels); Contribution to achieving the Brazilian sector goal of sanitation and access to water for all (National Water and Sanitation Plan, PLANSAB). Target group Direct target group Residents of medium-sized towns in the Paraopeba watershed who directly benefit from improved wastewater disposal and sanitation; Indirect target group Residents in the vicinity of the large sewage treatment plants in the metropolitan region of Belo Horizonte and Montes Claros who benefit from the improved water quality, and the Brazilian population through the contribution to global climate protection.
