Description | The Murray Basin Rail Project (MBRP) is a freight rail project in Victoria, Australia, originally devised in 2015 to standardise Victoria's broad gauge rail network to align with neighbouring states. The project aimed to improve freight transport efficiency by enabling more produce to be transported by rail instead of trucks. However, the project was halted in 2019 when $440 million in funding ran out, with only half of the project completed. Remaining standardisation plans were scrapped in 2021, causing freight trains to make a 130-kilometre detour to access export ports. Farmers and advocacy groups are pushing for the completion of the project to reduce road freight and improve rail freight capacity. |
