Musanze hydropower PPP project

The Musanze hydropower PPP plant will be developed in two phases, The Rwaza I and II. When completed the combined output will be of about 3.6 MW. The project will be located on the Mukungwa River, Nkotsi Sector and is expected to connect more than 100,000 households to the grid. The Rwaza I will comprise a ‘run-of-river’ hydropower scheme, the installed capacity for the plant will be of 2.6 MW. The project is expected to divert 12m³ per second of flow from the Mukungwa River into a channel for approximately 1400m until it reaches forebay. It will be located in the northern province of Rwanda. The Rwaza II also involves a ‘run-of-river’ hydropower scheme, the installed capacity for the plant will be of 1.0 MW. This phase will divert 14m³ per second of flow from the Mukungwa River directly into penstock, running along the right bank of the river for approximately 500m. It will be located in the northern province of Rwanda.
