Dateline Resources Ltd., an Australian company, has launched a rare earths mining project just outside Joshua Tree National Park in the Pinto Mountains south of Twentynine Palms. The project involves exploration for heavy rare earth elements, which are critical for electric vehicles, wind turbines, and defense systems. The company has acquired and staked claims on over 20,520 acres, with a total footprint of roughly 32 square miles, mostly under Bureau of Land Management jurisdiction. The project is in early stages, with further testing needed to confirm the extent of rare earth elements. Environmental concerns include potential harm to desert tortoise habitat, water depletion, traffic, and toxic waste generation.
