The population of Nagpur, a city of 2.4 million inhabitants, is growing steadily, by 17% in the last 10 years. This trend will continue. Currently, less than 5% of all inner-city journeys are made by public transport - a low figure even by Indian standards. Private vehicles make up 74% of traffic, 56% of which are two-wheelers. The number of cars and two-wheelers on the city's streets is growing much faster than the population (+7% between 2011 and 2012). Nagpur is thus reflecting the nationwide trend towards more urbanisation and more private transport. However, this process is relatively slow in Nagpur, which not only makes urban planning intervention easier, but also makes it particularly promising. In order to meet the challenges outlined in a timely manner, the city is planning significant investments in efficient, climate-friendly public transport. The plan is initially to build two above-ground metro corridors, and in a second step, feeder systems are to be expanded and thus an integrated public transport network created. The metro includes 38 km of tracks, 36 metro stations and 70 metro carriages with space for up to 270 passengers per carriage, as well as maintenance depots and signaling technology. The project is being implemented by the specially founded project company NMRCL. NMRCL is owned equally by the state of India and the state of Maharashtra. The total cost of the project is around EUR 1.24 billion. Of this, up to EUR 500 million is to be financed from the FZ promotional loan. The remaining financing will come from the equity of the two owners and shareholder loans. In addition to KfW, the French development bank AFD was asked to participate in the debt financing. The aim of the project is to contribute to a greater and sustainable use of an energy-efficient, climate-friendly public transport system in Nagpur. The project is thus part of the objectives of the FC programme Climate-Friendly Urban Mobility and the EZ programme in the (sub-)focus area of Sustainable Urban and Industrial Development.
