Nairobi-Mombasa Expressway Project

The Nairobi-Mombasa expressway was a planned highway project initially to be constructed by American construction firm Bechtel at an estimated cost of Sh300 billion. The project faced challenges including disagreements on funding and the exit of a key contractor, Portuguese firm Mota-Engil, which led to the collapse of the project. The National Treasury's public private partnership committee determined the project to be ill-conceived and unsustainable, resulting in its termination. The Kenya National Highways Authority had signed an agreement with Everstrong Capital for the construction, but the project was cancelled after the withdrawal of Mota-Engil and concerns over the project's financial viability and toll costs.
