Description | The Nairobi-Mombasa expressway was a planned highway project intended to ease congestion and cut travel time between Nairobi and Mombasa from 10 to about four hours. Initially planned to be constructed by American company Bechtel at an estimated cost of Sh300 billion, the project faced funding disagreements and was later taken over by Everstrong Capital with Portuguese firm Mota-Engil as a technical and financial partner. However, Mota-Engil pulled out, leaving Everstrong with a technical and financial gap. The National Treasury's public private partnership committee deemed the project ill-conceived and unsustainable, leading to its cancellation. |
