Namibia - Northern Railway Extension Project

The proposed Northern Railway Extension project would facilitate balanced development of infrastructure facilities in the regions/areas, which were hitherto neglected. It involves the extension of the rail line from Tsumeb to Ondangwa (248 km). These areas have been identified as critical for economic growth and poverty reduction. Any improvement or expansion to the existing transport infrastructure facilities in these areas would stimulate economic growth, promote regional integration and economic co-operation between Namibia and Angola through trade links. The construction of the new rail link is a major step towards development of the “Namibe-Lubango-Oshikango-Walvis Bay Corridor” which has been identified as priority for both Governments of Namibia and Angola. It would contribute to the national policy objective of sustained economic development in the northern regions. The overall project will be implemented over a period of 40 months with a total cost estimated at UA 49.32 million, net of taxes and duties.
