Description
Description | Information Water Resources-KA has come up with Narayanapur Left Bank Canal [NLBC] Project with a ticket size of 2405.84 INR Crores. This project in Irrigation sub-sector involves The current status of the project is Completion Certificate/COD and is being developed through the EPC route. Economic/Social Impact of the Project Narayanapur Left Bank Canal [NLBC] under Upper Krishna Project is the life line canal in Northern Karnataka irrigating 4.50 lakh hectares of command area spread over in perennially drought prone districts of Kalaburagi, Yadagiri and Vijayapura. The distribution network under NLBC includes five main branch canals viz- Indi branch canal, Jewargi branch canal, Mudbal branch canal, Shahapur branch canal andHunasagi branch canal and their sub systems. These canals had been completed between 1982 to 1997 and since then commissioned for irrigation purpose. The NLBC system, which is in operation for about 3 decades had developed certain deficiencies in its capacity to deliver the required quantum of water for irrigation to its command area, especially to the tail end farmers depriving them of their rights for irrigation. Optimum water use efficiency was not being attained due to [a] damage in the canal network systems, [b] failure of slope and seepages in the canal network, [c] absence of proper rotation system and management of flow of water, [d] absence of proper regulating arrangements, and [e] farmers growing water intensive crops in an unscientific manner resulting in usage of excess water. As such, command area to an extent of about 1.05 lakh ha under the project was not getting required quantities of irrigation water. In addition to this, absence of proper drainage resulted in water logging and subsequent salinity and alkalinity in the command area to an extent of 37580 ha |
