NASA's X-59 experimental jet, built in collaboration with Lockheed Martin at the Skunk Works plant in Palmdale, California, aims to break the sound barrier without generating the traditional sonic boom noise. The jet's design transforms the sonic boom into a quieter 'thump' sound, potentially allowing supersonic flights over land. The aircraft recently completed its first flight and will undergo a test campaign at NASA's Armstrong Flight Research Center to measure noise and shock waves, including tests near civilian communities.
